After three years of preparation, the Heart of PQ, an interactive exhibition/performance, took place from June 13-26, 2003 in the Middle Hall of the Industrial Palace on the Exhibition Grounds in Prague. The project was designed to liven up the Prague Quadrennial International Exhibition of Scenography and Theatre Architecture with live theater creations.
The activities were centered around a Labyrinth of theatrical spaces based on the theme of the five human senses, designed by professor Dorita Hannah especially for the project. Artists from all over the world came together, including designers, actors, directors, dancers, lighting designers, and others. They worked together to make an interactive theatre Exhibition that explored the human senses, and in which the visitor or non-professional could take part and reveal their creativity.
Over the course of two weeks, the project included 32 fifteen-minute-long shows by groups of artists each day - all together about 480 shows. In addition, there were another four performances and lectures a day (about 45 in all); one evening performance every day (each of the "senses" had the opportunity to present two evening performances during the project). The evening performances drew around 300 visitors at each Event. During the project a number of other presentations, talks and improvisations took place spontaneously. The interactive exhibition with ist five towers of the senses were open to visitors non-stop from 10:00-18:00 each day for the 13 days of the Exhibition.
Over 300 artists and organizers were involved in the project under the artistic leadership of Tomás Ziska. The main ones includ: Monkey's Wedding Theatre Company (South Africa), MAU Dance Company (New Zealand), Akhe Group-optical theatre (Russia), Kyzyl Traktor-fine arts-nomadic theatre (Kazakhstan), Les Productions Recto-Verso - technologic theatre (Canada), Carol Brown - Dance (Great Britain), Sachiyo Takahashi - Sound design (Japan), and Ryuzo Fukuhara - butoh (Japan).
